Tell us about your business:
Wagtail Natives Nursery is a Social Enterprise dedicated to growing native plants with a proven ability to survive in the unique and challenging climate of the Snowy Monaro Region. We grow more than 150 species of trees, shrubs, forbs, grasses and sedges that perform essential roles in local ecosystems, and many important functions in paddocks and gardens. We supply local farmers, Landcare, Council, NSW Government, large commercial projects, and local gardeners. Our impact extends beyond the nursery through community events and workshops, partnerships with local community organisations, and our commitment to protecting and improving our local species and environment.
How would $5k or $10k enable you to create more profit and impact in your business?
A funding injection into the business would allow us to build 2 more greenhouses, increasing our capacity at a significantly faster rate than we could achieve on our current income.
Increased growing space means increased capacity to grow hardy seedlings for crucial planting projects, the ability to quote for larger projects, and the potential for a significant increase in profit.
Selling more plants means Wagtail Natives can continue to host impactful community events and workshops.
A sustainable income stream means we can continue our vital work for Threatened Species and continue to expand our species growing list.
Please outline what you would spend the grant on:
Purchase and construction of one ($5k) or two ($10k) greenhouses. These are essential infrastructure for growing seedlings in the Snowy Monaro Region. It takes approximately 12-14 months from seed to saleable size, which means all tiny plants need help to survive their first winter.
These greenhouses will be sourced from Sage Horticultural – an Australian family-owned business based in Victoria. The structures will stand up to the fierce winds and weather conditions of the Snowy Monaro Region and provide safe, comfortable working environments for my awesome staff.
